Art in January

Hello 2023! January starts off with classes, art openings, a film festival, and music. Be sure to check out the Homegrown Winter Fiasco on Friday, January 13 with 15 bands playing free music at 5 venues in the Lincoln Park Craft District. Scroll down for details and links!

"For one night only, the Duluth Depot is hosting the first ever mini Nicholas Cage film fest and birthday celebration in Minnesota — “Caged” in at the Depot. Three Nicholas Cage movies will be screened: National Treasure (PG), Con Air (R), and Face/Off (R). Doors open at 5 p.m. with the first movie starting at 5:30. There will be a cash bar, a concession stand and Superior Waffles. Plus, there will be trivia and prizes in celebration of Nick Cage’s birthday. Parental discretion advised."

Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour - Duluth, DECC Symphony Hall, 350 Harbor Drive
"Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival is held every fall in Banff, Alberta. The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour then hits the road with stops in roughly 550 communities and more than 40 countries across the globe, celebrating the amazing achievements in outdoor storytelling and filmmaking. 
This stop on the tour is hosted by the Duluth Cross Country Ski Club, and proceeds from the event benefit local community ski projects. Each day offers different films.

Doors open at 5 p.m. so attendees can check out gear at the local sponsor booths, watch gear demos, enter a raffle, grab a drink and a bite to eat, try free samples from local vendors, and meet up with friends. Tickets are $22.88 and are available at universe.com or in person at the DECC ticket office adjacent to Amsoil Arena. Ticket office hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m."

"Students will be introduced to the basics of pottery. The cost includes kiln firing one piece. Firing additional pieces will be charged accordingly. An additional “glazing session” will be scheduled with the student, or at the student’s discretion, the teacher will glaze pieces for the student. Cost: $90"

"The Duluth Art Institute offers two-hour figure drawing sessions to serious artists, from beginner to expert. Sessions are held on the first Saturday of each month and include a live model. Work time is self-directed, no instruction is offered. Headphones and water bottles are welcome. "Glensheen is excited to host a FREE Community Day event featuring Classic Christmas Tours of the mansion. When arriving, guests will be welcomed at the Ticket House and proceed to the Carriage House and Mansion for their self-guided tours. Grounds access will also be available for free and guests are encouraged to tour the outdoor Spirit of the Lights light display throughout the day. January 8 will be the final day that Glensheen is decked out for Christmas this season. This year, we brought in newly inspired decorations to fill the mansion with color and fun for the holidays!"

"The theme for this show is Healing Through Community and the youth needed to share visually "what bravery means to them." There will be 22 artwork pieces on display and some will be for 
sale. This art reception is part of a series of events starting on Jan. 9 organized by the Duluth Human Trafficking Committee in recognition of Human Trafficking Awareness Month."

"Spend time at the historic Lincoln Park Building exploring the art of photography with local artist and educator, Susanna Gaunt. Learn the ins and outs of your camera, creatively compose images, and develop a photographic vision that will enhance your work.

"Students have access to a photo studio equipped with backdrops and lighting at the Lincoln Park Building. In addition to the photography studio, photo club will take walking field trips throughout the Lincoln Park neighborhood, so participants will be required to submit a signed permission/emergency contact form prior to their first photo club session. Beyond learning about cameras and composing imagery, students will have the opportunity to experiment with photographic chemistry, build a zine, receive 3-5 prints of the photographs they take each month, and work towards an exhibition of their photography in late the fall of 2023. 2nd Tuesday of Each Month (Unless otherwise noted: Jan 10, Feb 14, Mar 14, Apr 4*, May 9) Cost: $25 per session ($105 for all 5 sessions)"

Studio Oil Painting with Matt KaniaDuluth Art Institute Lincoln Park Building, 2229 W. 2nd Street
"This class is for everyone who wants to learn the basics of oil painting, to advance existing painting skills, or to learn new working methods. Matt will demonstrate in each session and as a class we will explore important painting techniques. Additionally, each student will receive individual instruction based on level of experience. All class sessions will involve direct painting from still life to craft representational oil paintings on canvas. Topics covered in class will include: creating a composition on canvas, evaluating observed color, discerning values, mixing paint colors, ways to use a paint brush, working with a palette knife, different ways to start and finish a painting, and more.

"This class is open to very beginners to intermediate painters. Students are invited to bring their own oil painting supplies, but Duluth Art Institute will have all necessary supplies to use during class. If a class is canceled due to weather, the make-up date will be Tuesday, February 21, 2023.

eneral orientation to everything Duluth Makerspace and enables attendees to earn a fob which gives them RFID access to our tools and workspace from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day. It is intended for people interested in becoming a MakerSpace member. Attendees will be expected to have a current membership or pay for a monthly membership at the time of orientation. "Inspired by Nordic textile patterns, Lines and Lineage: Works by Amy Sands at the Nordic Center presents new reimagined artworks utilizing textile patterns from the collections of the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis and the Osterøy Museum in Loneväg, Norway. Several of the works are inspired by an old sample book of Swedish bobbin lace from the ASI collection entitled “Knyppel Profver” or “Lace Tests.” This book belonged to Carolyn Hjelmerus, who immigrated to Minnesota in 1889."

"A Stillwater native, Jack Swanson is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after young tenors in the opera world. His distinctive high lyric voice is known for singing the acrobatic arias of Rossini and the legato melodies of Donizetti. The Opera Critic notes that Swanson possesses “that elusive feature that many otherwise good tenors lack, those lusciously, sweet, strong high notes.” Swanson continues to conquer demanding roles on opera stages both nationally and internationally. Susan Hensel: Bending Toward Beauty, Duluth Art Institute, John Steffl Gallery, 506 W. Michigan Street
"With limited color palettes and basic techniques Minnesota artist Susan Hensel creates textile sculptures and mixed media works. Spanning a wide range of sizes, Hensel investigates a variety of forms: folded embroidery, movable vessels, free-standing sculptures, and large-scale wall installations. Each piece celebrates the physics of light and encourages viewers to move through the gallery to witness colors mix, vibrate, and interact. Artist Talk: January 12, 5-8:30 p.m."

Learn a Tangle!
Jackstripes created by Chrissie Frampton, CZT, is an interesting grid pattern that invites dramatic fill. Click the link to learn how to draw this tangle line-by-line. Add some simple shading or a touch of color and use it to decorate envelopes, holiday cards, and bills.
