"The Duluth Art Institute offers two-hour figure drawing sessions to serious artists, from beginner to expert. Sessions are held on the first Saturday of each month and include a live model. Work time is self-directed, no instruction is offered. Headphones and water bottles are welcome. Paper, sketching materials and easels are available. Cost: $10 Member; $15 Non-member

"Register for sessions individually at duluthartinstitute.org. Participants must be 18 or older. The cost is $10 for DAI members and $15 for non-members. Check-in at the door is required. Covid-19 Protocol: Students, event attendees, renting artists, teaching artists and staff are required to provide proof of vaccination before the start of their activity. "Duluth Playhouse continues to thrive with the gracious support of our wonderful community volunteers. Seeking a team of motivated and passionate volunteers to assist with the next step in the Playhouse's consolidation to the HART District. Be the first to see the Playhouse's new storage space. Lunch provided for all volunteers. Sign up for full or partial day. Duluth MakerSpace Membership Orientation Class, Duluth MakerSpace, 3001 W. Superior Street
"This class enables attendees to earn a fob which gives them RFID access to our tools and workspace from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM every day. It is intended for people interested in becoming a MakerSpace member. Attendees will be expected to have a current membership or pay for a monthly membership at the time of orientation. A general orientation to everything Duluth Makerspace. In this mandatory class for RFID access, we go over important tool usage, as well as workshop expectations and function. Please bring a personal mask, eye, ear protection and form of ID to this orientation.

"The event will be held down Superior Street, starting 5 pm with Spoken Word at Zeitgeist Arts Atrium and ending with music and dancing at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum (LSRM) in the St Louis County Depot.

"It will be cold so bundle up! Outside at 6:30 in the HART district is an opening ceremony with Jillian Forte, Sara Sha (bagpipes), and projections by the Embassy. Join in our costumed mock funeral march for rotten ideas with Honor the Earth, proceeding west with dead Max Skeleton to 7:30 fire spinning in the main Library Plaza with Spin Collective. Back indoors across the street, Max will rise and dance as three bands play in the LSRM at 8:00: Boys Back Home (brass), Sugar on the Roof (strings), and Sadkin (art-pop).

Confluences: Writing, Composing, and Making Art from Art, The Nordic Center, 23 N. Lake Avenue
"Confluences, is a poetry video installation and quilt show, related to Packa’s new book of poems, Surface Displacements. There will be an artist’s talk about current projects with Sheila Packa, quilter Leslie Hughes, and composers Sara Pajunen, Wendy Durrwachter, Kathy McTavish. People attending are also invited to write an ekphrastic poem (describing a piece of art and expanding its scope) or to respond to a favorite poem, piece of music, or visual image by writing or drawing. Prompts will be available. Come for “coffee” and learn how these diverse artists experiment with text!"

"The Superior YMCA is offering classes every Monday throughout the month of November to celebrate Native American Heritage Month. Cassie and Brittany Brown from Keewenaw Bay band of Ojibwe are the instructors. The classes meet to discuss and practice various aspects of Native American culture and are designed for people school-age and older.

"This session is designed to be an introduction to Ojibwe culture that promotes awareness and understanding of the Ojibwe people of the region and dispel some of the common misconceptions and stereotypes about Native peoples. The session includes: The Ojibwe migration story, information on the four sacred medicines, significance and history of traditional lacrosse, information about dreamcatchers, traditional uses for birch bark, the significance of eagle feathers and more."

"Duluth Art Institute members are invited to bring supplies and artistic visions to the Lincoln Park facility to connect with other creative people and spend time experimenting with their medium of choice. Each session includes time to create and optional end-of-session group critiques. Non-members can attend one free session of open studio before becoming a member. Members receive three free sessions. "The Junior League of Duluth welcomes nearly 125 vendors, a variety of live entertainment, raffle baskets, decorated holiday trees and Santa to the Edmund Fitzgerald Hall and Lake Superior Ballroom. The event is the Twin Port’s largest arts, crafts and gifts show with vendors offering handcrafted home décor, clothing, jewelry, beauty products, homemade foods/treats, toys and more. Santa arrives with his sleigh on Saturday for pictures. The cost on Saturday is $6 for anyone over age 12; Sunday admission is $4. Attendees who bring a non-perishable food donation for Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food will be discounted $1."

If you are familiar with the Zentangle method of pattern drawing, you will love this class! Each week we will draw a new tile composition to create a pleasing piece of art on a 3.5" square tile with pen & ink with pencil shading. Linda LeGarde Grover Book Signing: The Sky Watched, Bookstore at Fitger's, 600 E. Superior Street
"The Sky Watched is a collection of poetry—some bilingual—that “tells the collective story of a Minnesota Ojibwe family and tribal community against the backdrop of history that begins with creation and continues to this day.” Through poetry, Linda LeGarde Grover contributes to the continuation of Ojibwe worldview and survival in the recounting of history and family stories. This is the first bilingual poetry book in English/Ojibwe: not translations, but poems using both languages.”

"November is National Novel Writing Month or NaNoWriMo, for short. To honor this event, the Duluth Public Library will be hosting multiple-word sprints both online and in person. What is a word sprint? Well, it’s just like running except with…wording. You have a set timer and your only task is to continue to write for the entire time. There is no pressure though! Nordic Music Workshops, The Nordic Center, 23 N. Lake Avenue
"The Nordic Center is hosting a series of music workshops from November through April on the third Sunday of each month. Learn folk tunes from Nordic Europe, along with their history and cultural traditions. The workshops are geared toward melody players, but are open to all musicians and listeners with a curiosity about Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Denmark and Sápmi. All classes are taught by Sara Pajunen. The cost to register is $10 per session or $50 for all six sessions. To register, fill out the Google Form."

"Filmed entirely in Duluth, Merry Kiss Cam, is a romantic comedy set during the Christmas season. Riki McManus of the Upper Midwest Film Office called the film, 'a love story to Duluth.' It will be streamed on its premiere night during this viewing party in the Brewhouse Barrel Room."

"Swing by the Duluth Folk School to carve spoons with others in a warm, informal setting. There will not necessarily be experienced carvers on hand to help you, so if you need to do some problem solving, have questions answered, or see techniques demonstrated, you’ll need to do that outside of these sessions."

"On Small Business Saturday, Zenith Bookstore hosts three local authors who will sign copies of their most recent books.

11 a.m.-1 p.m.: Sam Zimmerman, artist and author of Following My Spirit Home, a book of art and stories in English and Ojibwemowin, published by Duluth-based Black Bears and Blueberries Publishing.

1-3 p.m.: Tony Dierckins, author, along with the late Mary C. Norton, of Duluth’s Grand Old Architecture 1870-1940. Discover Duluth’s celebrated architecture in more than 420 historic photos and sketches.

"Artist Avigail Manneberg works across media: painting, drawing, video, and performance. Shared Bodies showcases abstract acrylics on canvas using soft, ambient colors. Emerging female figures and hands embody birth, physicality, and death. Manneberg asks: with the loss of one's parents, to what extent is one uprooted from their physical place perceived as home? Through this exhibition, Manneberg challenges how one defines, imagines, builds, and rebuilds home."

"Robert Patrick’s expansive symbolic paintings chronicle his sensory perceptions and experiences. Repetitive shapes ripple across canvas tarpaulins installed nearly flush to the gallery walls. Cadence and rhythm infuse Patrick’s patterns and document his multi-sensory reflections of being present in the moment. Patrick explains: “I paint fantasy environments as metaphors for landscapes of the mind, the imagery a product of combining senses shaped not only by light, but by sounds, smells, touch, and taste.” Patrick translates these moments into spontaneous mark-making and builds vast images that create an immersive viewing experience."
