Art in July!

July has arrived and summer has begun in the Twin Ports! For youth and teens ages 7-18, Duluth Art Institute has several Art Focused Summer Camps (click blue linked text for a full list). For the rest of us, there are ample opportunities to learn a new artistic skill and appreciate the artistry of others via indoor and outdoor art and craft markets. Scroll down for details and links!

"Shaun Chosa, a Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa tribal citizen and painter/graphic design artist, will show 30+ large scale paintings that mostly feature new works depicting Indigenous portraits, some with his added 'Classic Shaun Chosa Style' pop culture artistic influence for an extended period of time in our AICHO Galleries. Chosa had his first art gallery showing in Ely in 2000, and sold half of his paintings within the first hour of the artist reception! He has shown his eye-catching, curious, beautiful and captivating work since then at the Duluth Art Institute and several other galleries across the state. Zenith Bookstore 5th Anniversary Party, 318 N. Central Avenue
"Zenith Bookstore turns 5 years old on July 1. The anniversary event in the parking lot features Zenith Wheel of Fortune, live music, chalk art, make your own bookmark craft table, yoga (4-5 p.m.), a selfie station, the Rambler food truck, raffles and giveaways. Wear a Zenith T-Shirt or bring a Zenith book bag for a 10 percent discount on purchases.

"The bookstore is also raffling off a rare, signed first edition of Maya Angelou’s Wouldn’t Take Nothing For My Journey Now. Raffle tickets are $5 each and all proceeds go to support the Program for Aid to Victims of Sexual Assault. The raffle has been going on all month and the winner will be announced at the event. Zenith is also donating 10 percent of total sales on July 1 to PAVSA."

"St. Louis County Historical Society Museum Assistant Abby Johnson reads stories in the Lake Superior Ojibwe Gallery every Wednesday and Saturday during the summer. Sessions are free and aimed at 2–12-year-olds, however, all ages are welcome. All books have been approved by the American Indian Advisory Committee. The gallery, located on the fourth floor of the Duluth Depot, contains original artworks by noted painter Eastman Johnson and artifacts that represent the history and culture of the area’s Ojibwe people."

"SoulCollage is a method of self discovery through the creation and analysis of a deck of collaged cards. The monthly SoulCollage Circle provides space for participants to play with images and allow their minds and hearts to come alive. Making the SoulCollage cards is part of the process and helps participants learn a bit about themselves.

"The annual cost to attend sessions is $220. Attending a four-month series costs $80. The monthly drop-in rate is $25. Drop-ins must register by 5 p.m. on the Friday before the Sunday session. "Duluth Art Institute members are invited to bring supplies and artistic visions to the Lincoln Park facility to connect with other creative people and spend time experimenting with their medium of choice. Each session includes time to create and optional end-of-session group critiques. Non-members can attend one free session of open studio before becoming a member. Members receive three free sessions. Making the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial will include drawings, photographs as well as other documents and materials that artist Carla Stetson and writer Anthony Peyton Porter used during the creative process of designing the memorial. The exhibit will open June 17th, to coincide with Juneteenth."

"Sara Pajunen is a composer-improviser and a sound and visual artist. Trained as a violinist and employing locally-responsive media ranging from field recordings to drone imagery, her work is motivated by interactions between her ancestral roots, American cultural histories, and connection to our environments through sound."

Tara Austin: Boreal Ornament IV, Joseph Nease Gallery, 23 W. 1st Street
"We are thrilled to present Tara Austin - Boreal Ornament IV. This exhibition includes several new paintings completed between 2020 and 2022, plus a select number of earlier paintings that were part of her spring 2020 exhibition Boreal Ornament III that had to close down, due to Covid, before it officially opened. It's been a long road, but worth the wait for this exhibition of new and recent paintings."

July 22-August
Duluth Story Project Art Exhibit, Zeitgeist Arts Atrium, 222 E. Superior Street
"This collaborative community art exhibit features the work of those who participated in the Duluth Story Project. The Healthy Hillside team at Zeitgeist gathered stories from people in the community about their experiences during the pandemic. They were asked to draw their lived experiences as well as their vision for the future. To hear some of the stories behind this project, check out the podcast: Duluth Story Project: A Community Storytelling Experience. The first story will be released on Friday, July 22.

May 16-September 5
Christopher E. Harrison: Contemporary Visions, Duluth Art Institute, John Steffl Gallery, 506 W. Michigan Street
"In 1941, painter Jacob Lawrence created Migration Series­­­—60 panels that chronicle the exodus of southern African Americans to the North. Each panel describes a story, some of opportunity and survival, some of abuse and death. In Contemporary Visions, Harrison adapts Lawrence’s panels into collages with modern narratives, pulling his own distinctive style from the small-scale figurative works. Bright colors and simple shapes create visual interest that draws the viewer in to discover stories as they unfold."

Wynn Davis: Salvaged Memories, Corridor

"Scraps of paper, bits of string, and sticker remnants are among the materials Wynn Davis gathers during his daily runs. Each token is a fragment of a memory that evolves into bright, poignant collages. In Salvaged Memories, Davis chronicles his 5,400 annual miles by assembling layers of paint, graphite drawings, and salvaged materials on paper."

"Installation artists Steven Lemke and Kelsie Ward build environments that question how we locate ourselves within natural and human-made landscapes. Materials sourced from the construction industry including polystyrene, cast resin, and plywood bring together Lemke and Ward’s themes of place, perspective, and our increasingly constructed reality."

Making A Chainmaille Bracelet with Dawn BloomDuluth Folk School, 1917 W. Superior Street
"Chainmaille (aka chainmail, chain maille, or maille) is an ancient technique of linking rings together to form woven sheets of metal to be used in the making of armor. In this class you will learn how to make a bracelet using he Box Chain (aka Inca Puño and Queen’s Maille), a rectangular-shaped chain created by weaving round jump rings. You will learn how to open, close, and weave jump rings together, using both a flat-nose and a bent-nose pliers. Ages 18+; Cost: $60
