YAY! JUNE! There are a lot of fun classes to explore this month, including many for teens and youth, while outdoor art events abound. Get outside and see some art! Scroll down for details and links!
This list is updated as new events become available throughout the month, so feel free to check back and discover what may be new! Note that some classes and events have registration deadlines.

Zentangle (R) Explore! on Zoom!, a Live Virtual Event
A pen is a powerful tool. It can help you record your grocery list, write a check or send a card to a loved one. It can also help you deeply relax, become more mindful, and increase your mental focus. A pen is a simple and powerful tool. Bring your pen to ZT Explore and spend an hour breathing and drawing lines. Simple lines. You will be amazed at how easy it is to slow down, tune in, and explore with your pen.

- several small pieces of watercolor paper cut to 3"x4" or smaller;
- a permanent black pen for drawing - you can use a 01 Micron if you have one;
- a quiet place to draw.

Junior Naturalists: Monarchs as Art, Jay Cooke State Park, 780 Highway 210, Carlton
"The wonders of the monarch’s life are a natural work of art. Learn about the life cycle, migration and special roles of the monarch, and take home a creative caterpillar made during the program. The group will meet behind the River Inn Interpretive Center. All programs require registration due to limited space. SoulCollage, St. Scholastica Monastery, 1001 Kenwood Ave.
"SoulCollage is a method of self discovery through the creation and analysis of a deck of collaged cards. The monthly SoulCollage Circle provides space for participants to play with images and allow their minds and hearts to come alive. Making the SoulCollage cards is part of the process and helps participants learn a bit about themselves.
"The annual cost to attend sessions is $220. Attending a four-month series costs $80. The monthly drop-in rate is $25. Drop-ins must register by 5 p.m. on the Friday before the Sunday session. Sunday, June 5, 3:30 p.m.Meet and Greet with Author Angeline Boulley, Dr. Robert Powless Cultural Center, 202 W. 2nd Street
"The Duluth Library Foundation invites local teens and young adults for a free meet and greet with Angeline Boulley, author of Firekeeper’s Daughter. Guests are encouraged to bring a copy of the book it they have one. Light refreshments will be available. Boulley, an enrolled member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, is a storyteller who writes about her Ojibwe community in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula."
"Art play group is a sensory and art based experience created for children ages 2-6, however because our group is open-ended and exploratory in nature, children of all ages can enjoy materials in some way. Playgroup is an experience for the child(ren) and caregiver to explore new and engaging activities together.
"What to Expect: hands-on, child led art and sensory activities (materials may include: playdoh, slime, paint, clay, collage, mixed media and more!); focus on process art (process of creating and exploring) not art with an end result; messy fun, please wear clothes that are okay to get messy. Each child must be accompanied by a caregiver. Caregivers are responsible for the health and wellbeing of their child(ren) at all times during art play group." Cost: $10
A more advanced class for those with some experience with the Zentangle method of pattern drawing or who just want to go for it. RSVP required the Friday prior to each class. Class limited to 8 screens. Zoom link will be sent out on the day of class to all registered students. Cost: $15-$40 (sliding scale: you choose)
The June markets are held OUTSIDE at Canal Park Brewing Company. Different makers will be featured each week!"
Artist Reception: Shaun Chosa, Indigenous, AICHO’s Dr. Robert Powless Cultural Center, 212 W. 2nd Street
"Shaun Chosa, a Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa tribal citizen and painter/graphic design artist, will show 30+ large scale paintings that mostly feature new works depicting Indigenous portraits, some with his added “Classic Shaun Chosa Style” pop culture artistic influence for an extended period of time in our AICHO Galleries. Chosa had his first art gallery showing in Ely in 2000, and sold half of his paintings within the first hour of the artist reception! He has shown his eye-catching, curious, beautiful and captivating work since then at the Duluth Art Institute and several other galleries across the state. $10 suggested donation at the door." American Cloisonne: Torch-Fired Copper Enameling with Melanie Lieb, DAI Lincoln Park Building, 2229 W. 2nd St.
"Dive further into the processes of torch-fired copper enameling by adding another element—cloisonne! Cloisonne refers to an ancient technique that involves using wire on a metal backing to create designs or separate enamels. In this workshop, students will learn the basics of fusing glass to copper and explore how using cloisonne can bring their work to a new level. Extra copper can be purchased from the instructor for a small fee. Artists and makers of all skill levels are welcome. Ages 16+; Cost: $90 ($110 Non-Member)"
***Proof of vaccination is required to participate in this class. On the first day of class students must present their vaccine card (a copy of it is okay) as well as a form of identification. Masks will be required.
Zentangle pattern drawing is the simple practice of drawing lines one stroke at a time. Each line is an opportunity to slow down, relax, and focus on doing a simple thing well. Drawing lines is a practice that can inform every part of your life. A practice that invites you to release your expectations, embrace whatever shows up, and become fully present in the moment.
In this two class series, we will create beautiful art on a 3.5" x 3.5" paper tile using pen and ink and pencil shading. No previous drawing experience necessary. Relaxation is a common side effect. Life as Art: Turn Failure into Fertilizer, a Live Virtual Event hosted by Duluth Community Education and led by Esther Piszczek
This class is for anyone who would like to free their creativity while learning a simple tool to examine failure and find the gifts these life turns present. Through playful doodling, whimsical watercolor, and introspective journaling prompts you will be led through a mindful, creative experience that will help you turn any perceived failure into fertilizer. No prior experience is necessary, just an openness to explore and learn new things. Cost: $45

Spoken Word Open Mic, Wussow's Concert Cafe, 324 N. Central Avenue
"The Spoken Word Open Mic series, hosted by Tina Higgins Wussow, is open to all genres. Writers interested in a 10-minute performance slot can simply sign up on arrival. The event occurs on the third Thursday of each month."
"The Nordic Center will virtually host author Karen F. Nance for "Shift: Family, Origins, Identity and Belonging", a conversation and preview of the author’s forthcoming book The Duluth Lynching – A Family Perspective. The book is currently set for a December release."
“The Making the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial exhibit opens with a 4 p.m. gathering at the memorial on the corner of East First Street and Second Avenue East. Participants will then be invited to walk two blocks to the Nordic Center for a discussion with the artist and a gallery viewing from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibit will include drawings, photographs as well as other documents and materials that artist Carla Stetson and writer Anthony Peyton Porter used during the creative process of designing the memorial." On View: June 17-July 9
"Get outside and learn all about local flora and fauna while building skills in painting, drawing, fiber arts, and sculpture. Flowing rivers, trees of all varieties, flowers, fungi, woodland creatures, and more will inspire students to create artwork reflecting the beauty of our ecosystem. Please pack sunscreen, a water bottle, and a small nut-free snack each day. A portion of the class sessions will be spent outdoors. Ages 6–9; Cost: $150 ($200 Non-Member)"

"Swing by the Duluth Folk School to carve spoons with others in a warm, informal setting. There will not necessarily be experienced carvers on hand to help you, so if you need to do some problem solving, have questions answered, or see techniques demonstrated, you’ll need to do that outside of these sessions. Please bring Bring your own knives, bring your own spoon blanks, and whatever else you’ll need to carve spoons. This is an informal time to work with your hands, gather in community, tell stories, and of course – carve spoons!"

Wynn Davis: Salvaged Memories, Corridor Gallery, Duluth Art Institute, 506 W. Michigan Street
"Scraps of paper, bits of string, and sticker remnants are among the materials Wynn Davis gathers during his daily runs. Each token is a fragment of a memory that evolves into bright, poignant collages. In Salvaged Memories, Davis chronicles his 5,400 annual miles by assembling layers of paint, graphite drawings, and salvaged materials on paper." Artist Reception/Talk: Wednesday, June 8, 5:30-7 p.m.

Cross Stitch, Duluth Folk School, 1917 W. Superior Street
"Cross stitch is a simple method of embroidery in which stitches are made in an X pattern on a gridded fabric to create patterns ranging from simple and blocky to detailed and elaborate. In this class you will learn how to select materials, tools, and patterns as well as the basics of cross stitch. After class you will be able to begin any project large or small on your own. In class you will receive beginner materials such as a hoop, fabric, needles, and thread. A variety of patterns will be available for you to choose from for your first project. We will begin projects in class for you to complete at home. Cost: $69"

Feathers, created by CZT Suzanne McNeill, is an easy fill pattern with lots of drama. Click the link to learn how to draw this tangle line-by-line. It will make a lovely border.
