YAY! JUNE! There are a lot of fun classes to explore this month, including many for teens and youth, while outdoor art events abound. Get outside and see some art! Scroll down for details and links!

"The wonders of the monarch’s life are a natural work of art. Learn about the life cycle, migration and special roles of the monarch, and take home a creative caterpillar made during the program. The group will meet behind the River Inn Interpretive Center. All programs require registration due to limited space. "All naturalist programs at Jay Cooke State Park are free, but a Minnesota State Park vehicle permit is needed to park a vehicle in the park. Permits can be purchased upon arrival. The cost is $7 for a single day or $35 for a year. There are reduced price options for disabled veterans, Minnesota Tribal members and others, or if needed a pass can be checked out at some participating libraries."

"SoulCollage is a method of self discovery through the creation and analysis of a deck of collaged cards. The monthly SoulCollage Circle provides space for participants to play with images and allow their minds and hearts to come alive. Making the SoulCollage cards is part of the process and helps participants learn a bit about themselves.

"The annual cost to attend sessions is $220. Attending a four-month series costs $80. The monthly drop-in rate is $25. Drop-ins must register by 5 p.m. on the Friday before the Sunday session. "The Duluth Library Foundation invites local teens and young adults for a free meet and greet with Angeline Boulley, author of Firekeeper’s Daughter. Guests are encouraged to bring a copy of the book it they have one. Light refreshments will be available. Boulley, an enrolled member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, is a storyteller who writes about her Ojibwe community in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula."

"Art play group is a sensory and art based experience created for children ages 2-6, however because our group is open-ended and exploratory in nature, children of all ages can enjoy materials in some way. Playgroup is an experience for the child(ren) and caregiver to explore new and engaging activities together. 

"What to Expect: hands-on, child led art and sensory activities (materials may include: playdoh, slime, paint, clay, collage, mixed media and more!); focus on process art (process of creating and exploring) not art with an end result; messy fun, please wear clothes that are okay to get messy. A more advanced class for those with some experience with the Zentangle method of pattern drawing or who just want to go for it. RSVP required the Friday prior to each class. "Duluth Art Institute members are invited to bring supplies and artistic visions to the Lincoln Park facility to connect with other creative people and spend time experimenting with their medium of choice. Each session includes time to create and optional end-of-session group critiques. Non-members can attend one free session of open studio before becoming a member. Members receive three free sessions. "Duluth teenagers are invited to a free after school art program. Bring your works in-progress or create something totally new. College art students are present to help you at every open studio. All supplies are provided and no previous art experience is required—everyone is welcome. Every Teen Open Studio includes food since it is hard to make art on an empty stomach. There will be a guest artist featured in June!

"Shaun Chosa, a Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa tribal citizen and painter/graphic design artist, will show 30+ large scale paintings that mostly feature new works depicting Indigenous portraits, some with his added “Classic Shaun Chosa Style” pop culture artistic influence for an extended period of time in our AICHO Galleries. Chosa had his first art gallery showing in Ely in 2000, and sold half of his paintings within the first hour of the artist reception! American Cloisonne: Torch-Fired Copper Enameling with Melanie Lieb, DAI Lincoln Park Building, 2229 W. 2nd St.
"Dive further into the processes of torch-fired copper enameling by adding another element—cloisonne! Cloisonne refers to an ancient technique that involves using wire on a metal backing to create designs or separate enamels. In this workshop, students will learn the basics of fusing glass to copper and explore how using cloisonne can bring their work to a new level. Extra copper can be purchased from the instructor for a small fee. Artists and makers of all skill levels are welcome. Ages 16+; Cost: $90 ($110 Non-Member)"

Zentangle (R) Pattern Drawing: an Introduction, Duluth Community Education, on Zoom!
Zentangle pattern drawing is the simple practice of drawing lines one stroke at a time. Each line is an opportunity to slow down, relax, and focus on doing a simple thing well. Drawing lines is a practice that can inform every part of your life. A practice that invites you to release your expectations, embrace whatever shows up, and become fully present in the moment.

In this two class series, we will create beautiful art on a 3.5" x 3.5" paper tile using pen and ink and pencil shading. No previous drawing experience necessary. Relaxation is a common side effect. "Oh the peaceful sounds of summer…waves washing up on the shore and wind chimes blowing in the breeze. You can enjoy both and bring a bit of the beach to your own backyard with this fun nature craft! In this class, we’ll be making wind chimes from driftwood! We’ll prepare our driftwood with sandpaper, a saw, and a drill to piece it together with other unique objects for a one-of-a-kind creation. Life as Art: Turn Failure into Fertilizer, a Live Virtual Event hosted by Duluth Community Education and led by Esther Piszczek
This class is for anyone who would like to free their creativity while learning a simple tool to examine failure and find the gifts these life turns present. Through playful doodling, whimsical watercolor, and introspective journaling prompts you will be led through a mindful, creative experience that will help you turn any perceived failure into fertilizer. No prior experience is necessary, just an openness to explore and learn new things. Cost: $45

“The Making the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial exhibit opens with a 4 p.m. gathering at the memorial on the corner of East First Street and Second Avenue East. Participants will then be invited to walk two blocks to the Nordic Center for a discussion with the artist and a gallery viewing from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibit will include drawings, photographs as well as other documents and materials that artist Carla Stetson and writer Anthony Peyton Porter used during the creative process of designing the memorial." Flowing rivers, trees of all varieties, flowers, fungi, woodland creatures, and more will inspire students to create artwork reflecting the beauty of our ecosystem. "Swing by the Duluth Folk School to carve spoons with others in a warm, informal setting. There will not necessarily be experienced carvers on hand to help you, so if you need to do some problem solving, have questions answered, or see techniques demonstrated, you’ll need to do that outside of these sessions. 
Please bring Bring your own knives, bring your own spoon blanks, and whatever else you’ll need to carve spoons. This is an informal time to work with your hands, gather in community, tell stories, and of course – carve spoons!"

"This well established art fair has over one hundred Juried Artists exhibiting & selling fine art and craft including, ceramics, photography, paintings, prints, metal, glass & wood sculpture, jewelry and fiber. Located at the foot of the recreation area’s Beach House and ball fields, the event is accessible by bus and bike, as well as the nearby airstrip and public boat launch. With artist tents lining a paved path that extends through the park, the show allows people with physical disabilities the chance to fully experience the event."

"Staci Lola Drouillard launches her new book, Seven Aunts. A descendant of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Anishinaabe, Drouillard lives and works in her hometown of Grand Marais. Her first book, Walking the Old Road: A People’s History of Chippewa City and the Grand Marais Anishinaabe, won the Hamlin Garland Prize in Popular History and the Northeast Minnesota Book Award for nonfiction and was a finalist for a Minnesota Book Award."

"Letterpress is one of the oldest forms of printing technology, and the computer nearly killed it in the 1980s. Janelle Turner-Miller and Stacie Renne show how Warrior Printress Letterpress and Design are preserving and expanding the world of letterpress in the digital age. The demo of letterpress and its connection between 19th century presses and 21st century technology takes place in-person at Warrior Printress. Masks are required."

Making A Chainmaille Bracelet with Dawn Bloom, Duluth Folk School, 1917 W. Superior Street
"Chainmaille (aka chainmail, chain maille, or maille) is an ancient technique of linking rings together to form woven sheets of metal to be used in the making of armor. In this class you will learn how to make a bracelet using he Box Chain (aka Inca Puño and Queen’s Maille), a rectangular-shaped chain created by weaving round jump rings. You will learn how to open, close, and weave jump rings together, using both a flat-nose and a bent-nose pliers. Ages 18+; Cost: $45 (early bird price before June 12); $60 (after June 12)

Christopher E. Harrison: Contemporary Visions, Duluth Art Institute, John Steffl Gallery, 506 W. Michigan Street
"In 1941, painter Jacob Lawrence created Migration Series­­­—60 panels that chronicle the exodus of southern African Americans to the North. Each panel describes a story, some of opportunity and survival, some of abuse and death. In Contemporary Visions, Harrison adapts Lawrence’s panels into collages with modern narratives, pulling his own distinctive style from the small-scale figurative works. Bright colors and simple shapes create visual interest that draws the viewer in to discover stories as they unfold."

Wynn Davis: Salvaged Memories, Corridor

"Scraps of paper, bits of string, and sticker remnants are among the materials Wynn Davis gathers during his daily runs. Each token is a fragment of a memory that evolves into bright, poignant collages. In Salvaged Memories, Davis chronicles his 5,400 annual miles by assembling layers of paint, graphite drawings, and salvaged materials on paper." Artist Reception/Talk: Wednesday, June 8, 5:30-7 p.m.

Shaun Chosa, Indigenous, AICHO’s Dr. Robert Powless Cultural Center, 212 W. 2nd Street
"Shaun Chosa, a Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa tribal citizen and painter/graphic design artist, will show 30+ large scale paintings that mostly feature new works depicting Indigenous portraits, some with his added “Classic Shaun Chosa Style” pop culture artistic influence for an extended period of time in our AICHO Galleries. Chosa had his first art gallery showing in Ely in 2000, and sold half of his paintings within the first hour of the artist reception! He has shown his eye-catching, curious, beautiful and captivating work since then at the Duluth Art Institute and several other galleries across the state." Gallery Viewing Hours: Fridays from 4-6 p.m.

"Installation artists Steven Lemke and Kelsie Ward build environments that question how we locate ourselves within natural and human-made landscapes. "Cross stitch is a simple method of embroidery in which stitches are made in an X pattern on a gridded fabric to create patterns ranging from simple and blocky to detailed and elaborate. In this class you will learn how to select materials, tools, and patterns as well as the basics of cross stitch. After class you will be able to begin any project large or small on your own. In class you will receive beginner materials such as a hoop, fabric, needles, and thread. A variety of patterns will be available for you to choose from for your first project. We will begin projects in class for you to complete at home. Cost: $69"
