Christopher E. Harrison: Contemporary Visions, Duluth Art Institute, John Steffl Gallery, 506 W. Michigan Street
"In 1941, painter Jacob Lawrence created Migration Series—60 panels that chronicle the exodus of southern African Americans to the North. Each panel describes a story, some of opportunity and survival, some of abuse and death. In Contemporary Visions, Harrison adapts Lawrence’s panels into collages with modern narratives, pulling his own distinctive style from the small-scale figurative works. Bright colors and simple shapes create visual interest that draws the viewer in to discover stories as they unfold." Art Reception: Thursday, May 26, 5:30–8 p.m.

Featured Class: Monday, May 30, 6-8 p.m.
Tunisian Crochet 101, Yarn Harbor, 4629 E. Superior Street
"Tunisian Crochet (also called Afghan Crochet) is a hybrid of knitting and crochet that is so much easier than it looks! It is a seriously under-rated and versatile technique that can produce a thick, plush fabric in what feels like no time at all. Using a long crochet hook you can produce anything from quick blankets to garments. This class is a perfect place to start with beginner-level Tunisian crochet stitches and simple pattern reading. You will leave class equipped to do the basic stitches, read a simple pattern, and you will make a simple dishcloth.
This class is open to absolute beginners. Prior experience with traditional crochet is an asset but not required. Cost: $35"

Learn a Tangle!
Malb, created by
Japanese CZT Sayomi Koike, is an interesting organic tangle. Its auras make it seem tricky, but it is exceedingly easy to draw. Click the link to learn how to draw this tangle line-by-line. It will make a lovely border. Add some simple shading or a touch of color and use it to decorate envelopes, holiday cards, and bills. You can learn how to draw this tangle and many more on Linda Farmer's, CZT, blog at tanglepatterns.com.
