Spring has arrived and it is time to learn new things! There are many opportunities this month to experience a variety of art forms, including, film, ceramics, art, drawing, and more. Scroll down for details and links!

"Have you ever wanted to have your art on display for all to view? Now you can! This art show is for Kids, Tweens, Teens, and adults! 

"Pick up your art kit at any library location from April 4 through May 2, or until supplies last. Inside your kit, you will find a tiny canvas, a few paints, and a paintbrush to get you going. Feel free to add your own supplies to complete your work of art.

"Return your artwork to any library location by May 6th so that your art can be prepped and put up in the Tiny Art Show. Where you drop off your art is where it will be on display. On View: May 9-31"

"Mosaics Dance Company hosts Dialogue of the Heart, a riveting and expressive array of dance works inspired by the biblical book of Psalms. Registration is encouraged at duluthvineyard.org. With a cast of 19 dancers, the Dialogue of the Heart show takes the audience on a journey through the Psalms, highlighting what it means to bear witness to each other’s joys, conflicts and sorrows."

"Marshmallow Clouds: 
Two Poets at Play Among Figures of Speech is the newest collaboration between poet Connie Wanek and Ted Kooser, former U.S. Poet Laureate and Putlizer Prize winner, along with illustrator Richard Jones. During this live, in-store event Wanek will be in conversation with former Duluth Poet Laureate Ellie Schoenfeld. Proof of Covid-19 vaccination is required to attend this event, as is the wearing of face masks over nose and mouth for everyone ages 2 and up."

"The Birkenstein Arts Movement (BAM) Program is a robust after school program that teaches youth how to build community and apply the creative process to problem solving. We designed BAM for youth currently enrolled at Lincoln Park Middle School. Artists receive art instruction ranging from drawing, sketching, painting, ceramics, collage, and photography. "Duluth Art Institute members are invited to bring supplies and artistic visions to the Lincoln Park facility to connect with other creative people and spend time experimenting with their medium of choice. "Our April read is Gichigami Hearts: Stories and Histories from Misaabekong, the One Book Northland choice for 2022. We will be joined by author Linda LeGarde Grover to discuss this powerful work – part memoir, history, poetry and myth. The Zenith Reads Book Club meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 6:00 pm. "Zeitgeist North by North Film School, in partnership with the Minnesota Discovery Center, offers this introductory course providing basic video and audio production lessons. The goal of the course is for students to develop the ability to capture great video images and audio, and to be able to edit those two elements together to tell a story. Sessions are designed for those age 16 and older. All experience levels are welcome. Cost: $250"

"Barlow is interested in reimagining our relationship to our racial identities through healing our collective understanding of belonging and what it means to be family. Her life-size oil paintings serve as both monuments to community members and explorations into how race entangles the intimate sphere of love, family, and friendship. Her work is colorful, tender and nuanced, and inspired by community dialogue and personal experience. In this 45-minute lecture, Barlow will discuss the liberatory and healing nature of art making: through the power of representation, witnessing and storytelling. "Tara Austin is an artist with an MFA in Painting who specializes in the folk art of Rosemaling. Austin’s work is part of a revival of rosemaling in the Upper Midwest which builds upon traditions while infusing each piece with contemporary reworkings that may ensure relevance to new generations. Her company, Scandi Bijou, provides painted heirlooms for the modern lifestyle, including Dala horses and rosemaled décor." Cost: $75 per class (All supplies included)

"Frames of Sexuality features a photo gallery along with quotes from local people about what sexuality means to them. Several local community resources, such as Safe Haven and Life House, will also be at the event. There will also be snacks. This is a family-friendly event."

"Sessions are open to all serious artists, from beginner to expert. Every session includes a live model, starting with short gestural poses and moving into longer holds. Work time is self-directed, no instruction offered. Headphones and water bottles are welcome. Paper, sketching materials, and easels are available. Artists must individually register online for each session. Check-in at the door is required. Attendees must be 18+. Cost: $10/session;

"Families are invited to learn about the life of children who lived in children’s homes during past decades. Sample foods they enjoyed during Easter, play traditional games, create fun crafts, hunt for eggs, tour Fairlawn Mansion, enter a coloring contest and meet the Easter Bunny. Fairlawn Mansion was the home of Superior mayor Martin Pattison and his family from 1890 to 1920. It then served as a children’s home for 42 years. The building is a museum today. Cost: $8 (ages 3-12); $10 (age 13 and older); Free (age 2 and younger)"

"SoulCollage is a method of self discovery through the creation and analysis of a deck of collaged cards. The monthly SoulCollage Circle provides space for participants to play with images and allow their minds and hearts to come alive. Making the SoulCollage cards is part of the process and helps participants learn a bit about themselves.

"The annual cost to attend sessions is $220. Attending a four-month series costs $80. The monthly drop-in rate is $25. Drop-ins must register by 5 p.m. on the Friday before the Sunday session. "Duluth teenagers are invited to a free after school art program. Bring your works in-progress or create something totally new. College art students are present to help you at every open studio. All supplies are provided and no previous art experience is required—everyone is welcome. "In this live figure drawing course, Heidi Blunt will teach timeless drawing methods and techniques in an approachable way for both beginners as well as more advanced artists. Working from the nude model students will draw the human form from direct observation to build up skills essential to the elements of life drawing, including anatomy, proportion, volume, composition, gesture, and the accurate and expressive use of line and tone are addressed to provide a focus for increasing skill. With a shared emphasis on traditional and non-traditional drawing techniques, participants will experiment with a variety of wet and dry materials, which may include charcoal, pastels, ink, and water-based paints. Kjolväska: Swedish Skirt Bag Workshop, The Nordic Center, 23 Lake Avenue
"Once Swedish kjolväskor (skirt purses or pockets), part of the Swedish folkdräkt (folk dress), were used to carry oats or salt so the cows would follow you home. Today, they may hold your cell phone or your car keys! In this workshop, Minneapolis textile artist Natalie Norman will guide you to create your own multi-purpose pocket. The surface design is a wool felt appliqué with traditional embroidery. You will learn 5 embroidery stitches and additional decorative filler stitches. Your kjolväska can be worn around your waist or as a shoulder bag to hold your belongings. Class is limited to 8 participants. Cost: $75 (pre-paid online) + $15 in-person materials fee paid to the instructor at the Nordic Center"

"In this Power of Art series workshop, Leslie Barlow will lead a conversation on how to implement public art projects that engage and interact with community stories. Participating artists will collaborate on methods for community engagement, reflect on the current state of public art, and compare mural creation techniques. Life as Art: Turn Failure into Fertilizer, a Live Virtual Event hosted by Duluth Community Education and led by Esther Piszczek
This class is for anyone who would like to free their creativity while learning a simple tool to examine failure and find the gifts these life turns present. Through playful doodling, whimsical watercolor, and introspective journaling prompts you will be led through a mindful, creative experience that will help you turn any perceived failure into fertilizer. No prior experience is necessary, just an openness to explore and learn new things. Cost: $45

"Learn to make diamond willow hiking sticks. Participants will harvest one or more sticks and bring them back to the working area to peel, shape and carve, leaving the three-hour class with the completed project. Transportation and sticks will be provided. "Learn what Collage is, and what it isn’t. By approaching collage as painting, explore the interactions between space and form through a variety of materials including paper and acrylic media. Collage was not an avant-garde art movement, but a revolt that opened up a new way of painting that is generally misunderstood yet had an impact on modern art. This workshops covers different ways of using many collage elements such as color, shape, texture, transfer and decollage methods, to create varied abstract compositions.

"Beth Livensperger’s large-scale collages depict women navigating the banal yet psychologically-charged space of office interiors, foregrounding female relationships across generations, from adversarial to supportive. In these pieces, receptionists are trapped behind tiny desks, a lone employee drowns in paperwork, and a manager delivers bad news to a subordinate. Men are relegated to bit parts—with visible hints that they still call the shots."

"The Horse of Course, a community event that will feature the work of over 20 local artists as well as works by Chicago-based dalahest artist Linley Erickson. "This art exhibition is by Bois Forte Ojibwe citizen and Finnish American Carl Gawboy. More than 30 watercolors, acrylics and ink washes will explore Anishinaabe and Finnish cultural life, landscapes and spiritual teachings. Visitors Gallery viewing hours will be every Friday from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. between March 11 and May 27. Gawboy will host viewing hours on April 1, April 15, April 29, May 13 and May 20."

Marjorie Fedyszyn: Irreproachable, Duluth Art Institute, George Morrison Gallery, 506 W. Michigan Street
"Abstract artist Marjorie Fedyszyn found a meditative and grounding way to heal from childhood trauma through stitching and sculpting fabric. Large, appealing forms and embroidered panels represent the results of her restorative art practice. Voluminous sculptures grace the gallery and mimic fleshy forms that first appear naïve and playful, yet a visceral undertone evokes emotions of discomfort, shame, or disgust. Having felt no agency over her own body, Fedyszyn now processes the sexual abuse she experienced as a teen through her work and comes to a place of acceptance: 'I am a survivor.'" Cross Stitch, Duluth Folk School, 1917 W. Superior Street
"Cross stitch is a simple method of embroidery in which stitches are made in an X pattern on a gridded fabric to create patterns ranging from simple and blocky to detailed and elaborate. In this class you will learn how to select materials, tools, and patterns as well as the basics of cross stitch. After class you will be able to begin any project large or small on your own. In class you will receive beginner materials such as a hoop, fabric, needles, and thread. A variety of patterns will be available for you to choose from for your first project. We will begin projects in class for you to complete at home.

Registration Includes instruction and all materials, including hoop, fabric, needles, thread, and pattern. By the end of class, you will go home with all the materials needed to cross stitch, as well as the beginning of a project started in class. No prior experience required. Best for Ages 7 years and older."
