Goodnight, Absalom!near the Arising sculpture at Gichi-ode’ Akiing Park on the Lakewalk Plaza
"Fox & Beggar Theater presents this surreal dark comedy that fuses street theater, puppetry and contemporary dance into a whimsical critique of American capitalism, performed out of a hand-painted pop-up solar-powered double-decker vaudeville stage.
Attendees are invited to bring a lawn chair. The play starts at 7:30 and will run approximately 75 minutes with a short audience Q and A afterward. This event is free and open to the public.

6:30 p.m. Music: (9/3) Charlotte Montgomery; (9/4) Sugar on the Roof
7:30 p.m. Goodnight, Absalom!

"Synopsis: In the fictional town of Absalom, a larger-than-life chess match is played between two sinister railroad barons. Their strange game moves through a series of vignettes — the Dance of the Pawns, the Dance of the Knights, the Dance of the Bishops, etc. — in which the unfortunate chess pieces find themselves being made to do battle inside a prison they do not fully understand. As the game progresses, the chess pieces begin to become cognizant of their bleak situation … and attempt to lead a rebellion against the game itself.

"Goodnight, Absalom! is a surreal comedy about a plutocracy that has gamified modern life, obsessed with winning more and more wealth until the world’s resources are gone. The show fuses the spaghetti western genre with a barrage of Faulkner references, taking a look at a frighteningly polarized nation and questioning who might gain from keeping it divided, distracted and disenfranchised.

"A workshop production of Absalom was created as a two-week residency-in-quarantine last August at the Lookout Arts Quarry in Bellingham, Washington."

May 24-September 6
Chesley Antoinette: Tignon, John Steffl Gallery, Duluth Art Institute, 506 W. Michigan Street
"
Artist Chesley Antoinette is the creator and designer of Cantoinette Studios where she explores wearable art and sculpture. In Tignon, she presents a collection of unique turbans, exhibiting a vast range of color, form and wrapping techniques. The headwraps are accompanied by large scale contemporary photographs and essays providing visual and written historical context to the Tignon Law.

"The 1786 Tignon Law of Louisiana was enacted to oppress affluent women of African descent, to decrease their beauty and thereby diffuse their allure to white men. Under the administration of Governor Esteban Rodriguez Miro, women of African descent were forced to cover their hair as an effort to control them, their affluence, beauty and intelligence. However, the headwrap became a symbol of rebellion as women donned their hair with exquisite, colorful scarves, adding jewelry, ribbon and other fine material. The Tignon was and is embraced by women of African descent, proving an occasion to showcase one’s creativity and adaptability."

June 15-September
Tia Keobounpheng: DEFUSE, George Morrison Gallery, Duluth Art Institute, 506 W. Michigan Street
"Seeking a path beyond the hold trauma evokes on our minds and bodies, DEFUSE brings context to human thoughts and behavior. Approaching art as a practice, a journey, Keobounpheng explores inherited and lived trauma through patterned watercolors and woven materials that create organic sculptures and two-dimensional paintings. 'Sculptural installations,' she explains 'invite the visitor to cross the threshold in order to literally and viscerally see themselves in the artwork.'"

June 21-September 27
Karlyn Atkinson Berg: Unfolding OdysseyCorridor Gallery, Duluth Art Institute, 506 W. Michigan Street
"Inspired by the natural world and the literary genre magic realism, Karlyn Atkinson Berg’s collage paintings merge nature with fantasy. As with magic realism, Berg’s paintings explore nonlinear stories: viewers find imagery without a clear beginning, middle, or end. By placing the real and imaginary side by side, Berg experiments with scale and composition: insects overpower snakes while horses and humans float among statues and machinery. Nature Re-envisioned and Reality Transformed chronicles a journey of the known and unknown, elevating the viewer’s imagination while delivering a fantastical artistic experience."
